Zenith Doctor'S Watch Rare Chronograph Steel Case 38 Mm White Dial Caliber 146 On Leather 1950's. The Zenith "Doctor's Watch," equipped with the renowned manual-wind Caliber 146, is one of the rarest, most elegant, and highly sought-after vintage chronographs from the Le Locle-based manufacturer. This model is known as a "doctor's watch" (or pulsometer watch) because its dial features a specialized pulsometric scale rather than the standard tachymetric or telemetric scale. Physicians used this scale to quickly measure a patient's heart rate: by starting the chronograph and counting a set number of heartbeats (typically 15 or 30), the second hand would indicate the beats per minute (BPM) directly on the dial. Key features of the vintage models (1950s/1960s): • The Movement (Caliber 146): An exceptional chronograph movement featuring a column wheel and lateral clutch, derived from the architecture of movements by the Martel Watch Co. (a firm acquired by Zenith around 1960). It is the historic manual-wind predecessor that paved the way for the development of the automatic El Primero. It operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 38–44 hours. • Dial Configuration: A classic bi-compax layout with two sub-dials (small seconds at 9 o'clock and a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock), notably without a date display. • Case: Typically crafted from steel or gold (18k yellow or rose gold), with diameters characteristic of the era, ranging between 35 mm and 38 mm.
